UNITY

“Our common welfare should come first: personal recovery depends upon AA unity.

“Each member of Alcoholics Anonymous is but a small part of a great whole. A.A. must continue to live or most of us will surely die. Hence our common welfare comes first. But individual welfare follows close afterward.”

  • Without unity, A.A dies.
  • Individual liberty, yet great unity.
  • Key to paradox: each AA’s life depends on obedience of spiritual principles.
  • The group must survive or the individual will not.
  • Common welfare comes first.
  • How best to live and work together as groups.

    The Fearful One

Archie T’s story appeared in the original manuscript and the 1st Edition. It was subsequently retitled “The Man Who Mastered Fear”, and has appeared in every subsequent edition.

The Man Who Mastered Fear BB 4th Ed p246.

“He spent eighteen years in running away, and then found he didn’t have to run. So he started A.A in Detroit.”

    ACCEPTANCE

“We admitted we were powerless over alcohol – that our lives had become unmanageable.”

    • Who cares to admit complete defeat?
      • “It is truly awful to admit that, glass in hand; we have warped our minds into such an obsession for destructive drinking that only an act of Providence can remove it from us.”
    • Admission of powerlessness is the first step in liberation.
      • “Our admissions of personal powerlessness finally turn out to be the firm bedrock upon which happy and purposeful lives may be built.”
    • Relation of humility to sobriety.
      • “The principle that we shall find no enduring strength until we first admit complete defeat is the main taproot from which our whole society has sprung and flowered.”
    • Mental obsession plus physical allergy.
      • “We were the victims of a mental obsession so powerful that no amount of human will power could break it.”
    • Why must every A.A. hit bottom.
      • “We stand ready to do anything which will lift the merciless obsession from us.”

    p58

We are given clear instruction to be brave and to dig deep, in order to completely give ourselves to this simple program, as many other have done before us.

    To do so we need be determined and willing to become able to become;

    • Absolutely honest
    • Fearless
    • Thorough
    • Open-minded and unbiased

To do this we need the help of others and our Higher Power.

    p59

Outlines the certain and secure steps that we took.

    p60

We are encouraged to make spiritual progress, rather than to seek spiritual perfection.

The three pertinent ideas, carry us to Step Three.

We have to be convinced that any life run on self-will can hardly be a success.

    p61

Using the metaphor of the actor running the whole show, our egotistical controlling nature is revealed, fuelled by delusion, resentment, blame and self-pity.

    p62

We recognise that our troubles are basically of our own making. If we are to take responsibility for them, then we have to be able to recruit God’s help. There is no alternative.

    p63

The Step 3 Promise is followed by the Third Step Prayer, and we are encouraged to take this step with another understanding person.

  • My Prayer

Loving God, please grant me peace of mind and calm my troubled heart. My soul is like a turbulent sea. I can’t seem to find my balance so I stumble and worry constantly. Give me the strength and clarity of mind to find my purpose and walk the path you’ve laid out for me.
